Jan 20, 2015
The relationship between community structural characteristics, the context of crack use, and HIV risk behaviors in San Salvador, El Salvador Julia Dickson-Gomez studies HIV prevention among drug users in the United States and El Salvador and is also interested in the influence of structural factors on HIV risk. Her research explores the effects of housing policy on drug users' access to housing, variations in housing status and housing options of drug users, and levels of HIV risk related to these factors. Dr. Dickson-Gomez's work also explores macro- and micro-social contexts of crack use and HIV risk in communities in El Salvador. She has used qualitative methods to evaluate network-based HIV prevention interventions for drug users and at-risk women |

Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative
Feb 17, 2015
Mission statement: The Milwaukee Homeless Veteran Initiative provides the services that homeless and at-risk veterans need to reach and maintain their highest level of independence. Since 2008, we have helped more than 1,200 veterans and their families in a variety of ways. We fill the gaps that no one else addresses. The need is great and growing. We do outreach to find homeless veterans where they sleep and at daytime shelters, meal sites and other places where the homeless gather. We help them in obtaining benefits, housing, medical care, clothing, toiletries; transportation and other necessities, and furnishing apartments when they do get a place to live. |

Membership Has Its Rewards
Feb 24, 2015
Maintaining effective web presence is one of the most challenging tasks clubs face today. Other challenges include presentation, image handling, timely updates and the overall organization of a website. Also, the ability to edit the website is not limited to one person. Access can be granted to many contributing members, making it more current and interesting. Members can easily login and update their own profiles. All they need is a computer with Internet access. No more excuses for out-of-date directories! We'll cover accessing your benefits locally, at the District level, and through Rotary International. We'll also show demonstrate accessing the clubs goals for the year and monitoring the clubs progress. Come and see what you've been missing out on!

Rotary Youth Leadership Academy
Mar 10, 2015
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a program that originated with Rotary International and has subsequently been specifically designed by Rotary District 6250 for the students in Wisconsin & Illinois. RYLA encourages servant leadership in youth by recognizing and rewarding deserving 11th grade students who are chosen to attend RYLA as an "award" for their past and present leadership and service activities. These select young people attend an all-expenses-paid camp where they are inspired by a diverse group of exceptional speakers, make life-long friends through fellowship activities, and discuss the ethical and social issues of today. These activities are conducted in an atmosphere of trust and respect. The result is that these students return to their schools and communities motivated to take on additional leadership roles and to find additional ways to serve. RYLA's intent is to encourage students to be more effective servant leaders. RYLA is not a camp intended to teach leadership skills (it is assumed that the students in attendance already possess those skills), however the following topics naturally arise in the course of RYLA activities and discussions:

Ed Garza will speak to us about Concordia's program assisting veterans through the application maze and assisting them with government educational programs that may do not realize that they are eligible for.
Mr. Garza has also been successful in finding opportunities in transferring military training into college credits thus making the realization of a goal for a college degree easier to attain. They work with Veterans on accessing other programs and resume building to ease the transition back into civilian life. In Milwaukee one out of four men who are homeless are veterans, this program can and will change lives. |
