Promoting Peace

Rotary fosters understanding across cultures. We train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict and help refugees who have fled dangerous areas.

In Nigeria, a university president and Rotary Club  fight Boko Haram by educating and feeding victims

Sneaking into Boko Haram’s back yard to rescue girls wasn’t what a university president had planned on, but she, a Rotary Club and community leaders braved “dangerous territory” in Nigeria and started programs to feed and education refugees – whose number eventually swelled to 400,000.  Read the full story - click here.

Providing Clean Water

We help bring sustainable clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to more people every day. We don’t just build wells and walk away.

Clean water and sanitation is a human right. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they lead healthier and more successful lives.

We don’t just build wells and walk away. Rotary members integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene into education projects. When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school. And they can take those lessons home to their families, expanding our impact.

Rotary-USAID International H2O Collaboration

The Rotary International-USAID International H2O Collaboration is a partnership between Rotary and the U.S. Agency for International Development that supports lasting, positive change to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives.

Our partnership combines the vast network of Rotary volunteers with the expertise of USAID to influence communities and policymakers to solve seemingly unsolvable problems and bring about lasting change through education and advocacy.

Rotary and USAID are creating Tippy Tap devices to encourage good hygiene in remote areas. Tippy Tap devices use a simple foot paddle to tip a water container so people can safely wash their hands.

Our work

Since 2009, Rotary and USAID have partnered to improve access to clean water and sanitation in developing countries, working on continuous improvement while sharing learnings with other philanthropic and humanitarian organizations.

In 2015, the collaboration committed $4 million each to Ghana, Uganda, and Madagascar, with each partner providing half of the funds needed. Rotary seeks to raise $200,000 for each country by 2018 as part of its $2 million per country commitment. The investment will support:

WASH project design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation

Leadership and advocacy using Rotary members' expertise and resources to leverage WASH resources and initiatives

Innovation of processes, tools, and partnerships in the WASH sector, such as the WASH Sustainability Index Tool, which determines the long-term technical and financial sustainability of WASH interventions.
