The Global Water Center Tour and WaterPODNOTE - onsite meeting at 247 W Freshwater Way, Milwaukee This is an excerpt from the Nov. 2017 Biz Times Stonehouse Water Technologies, located at the Global Water Center, plans for its final manufactured product, the WaterPOD 8, to be commercially available in early 2018. The purification system can be used for residential, commercial and agricultural properties. “We’re hoping that, by as early as 2019, we will be selling thousands and thousands of units,” said Anne Wick, vice president of community relations. “This is going to be global, it’s not just going to be local.” In addition to manufacturing, the funding will be directed toward research and development, as well as marketing efforts, Wick said. The company has seven employees in all, having recently added two new employees. Wick credits Stonehouse’s residence in the Global Water Center and guidance from the Water Council in helping the company secure the investment. Stonehouse was previously part of the Water Council’s Pilot Program, an effort by Wells Fargo, Fund for Lake Michigan, and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District to advance new water technologies from the lab in Milwaukee to demonstration sites for real-world use. “There are exciting and fascinating things happening here in Milwaukee when it comes to water,” Wick said. “And the Water Council has been instrumental. With the exposure that we get, you couldn’t get that anywhere else.” |

Victory Garden Initiative builds communities that grow their own food, creating a socially just, ecologically sustainable, nutritious food system for all. Come hear from Montana about volunteer opportunities for our club to participate in helping others learn to grow their own food and work toward greater social equity. Montana shared this, "Urban agriculture benefits our communities through environmental, physical, mental, economic, and social means. VGI is first and foremost an educational organization that teaches people how to grow their own food, especially in the city. We also make growing food more accessible to people by installing gardens for them, providing garden mentors, and creating gardener communities. VGI does work throughout Milwaukee County and even Wisconsin, but we focus the majority of the money we raise on low-income neighborhoods and food deserts. We also operate an urban farm in the Harambee neighborhood of Milwaukee that we use for youth education and community engagement. VGI puts on a number of community events to raise awareness and engagement of urban agriculture throughout the year. Changing the health of our communities starts with changing the culture of them." Amigos Rotarians will be hearing from several organizations so that we can decide, as a club, where we would like to support and contribute our volunteer time and resources. Don't miss this meeting! Non-Rotarians and those who are Rotary-curious are invited to attend. |

University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee Distinguished Professor Dr. Paul Roebber will explain how and why weather and climate are not synonymous, what the implications of these differences are for understanding global climate change, and what we know (and don’t know) about them. Lastly, he will provide some information and resources for those wishing to learn more. ABOUT PAUL ROEBBER University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee Distinguished Professor Paul Roebber holds advanced degrees in meteorology and physical oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and McGill University. Dr. Roebber has several decades of experience in public and private weather forecasting, weather and climate analysis, and data science. He has edited and published extensively in the scientific literature, including co-authoring a book published by MIT Press on expert forecasting (Minding the Weather), and his work has led to improvements in operational tools used by the National Weather Service across the United States. In addition to his duties at UWM, he has been a Visiting Scientist at NOAA laboratories across the United States (Weather Prediction Center, Climate Prediction Center, National Severe Storms Laboratory, Earth System Research Laboratory) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Also, over a decade ago, Dr. Roebber founded Innovative Weather (IW), a weather decision support program staffed by UWM graduate and undergraduate students, an organization for which he provides administrative, technical and scientific direction. IW serves major corporate partners, including the WEC Energy group, Alliant Energy, the Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, and Lake Express Ferry, by providing customized realtime information regarding specific weather risks. |
