Maria Flores, Giving a Voice to Those Who Are Silenced
Maria Flores, a 25-year veteran of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), gave voice to the victims of labor trafficking to Rotary Amigos After Hours at the Milwaukee Athletic Club on Tuesday, March 28.
Among the highlights of Flores' speech:
- Trafficking in human beings is the globe's fastest-growing crime, despite increased awareness
- Labor trafficking generates billions of dollars each year
- Labor trafficking traps victims into various forms of servitude
- Labor trafficking is a form of slavery
- People are forced, scammed, or coerced to perform a service against their will
Flores offered recourse options - legal, financial, and psychological - and encouraged her audience to get involved in fighting labor trafficking.
