Once again, we will be providing a warm and nutritious meal for the women and children at the Cathedral Center. We are also fortunate to have 2 "Angels" who are preparing and providing the dinner that we will be serving. Amigos Rotarians will provide dessert, salad, beverages, and smoothies. There will also be a hands-on lesson on "how to read nutrition levels" with an eye toward comparing fat, sugar, sodium, and calories....even related to two different soups, chips, potatoes, etc. All foods used are accessible from stores convenient and affordable to Cathedral Center guests.
We are asking for members, friends, and those interested in helping to join us in serving the meal, interacting with the residents, and / or providing a donation to cover the cost of the meal extras and if possible, join us that night and help serve the dinner. Rotary Peace Fellows
Each year, Rotary awards up to 130 fully funded fellowships for dedicated leaders from around the world to study at one of our peace centers.
Through academic training, practice, and global networking opportunities, the Rotary Peace Centers program develops the capacity of peace and development professionals to become effective catalysts for peace. The fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and internship and field-study expenses.
Since the program began in 2002, the Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 1,500 fellows who now work in over 115 countries. Many serve as leaders in governments, NGOs, education and research institutions, peacekeeping and law enforcement agencies, and international organizations like the United Nations and the World Bank.

Our fellowships and where they work
The Rotary Peace Fellowship is designed for leaders with work experience in peace and development. Our fellows are committed to community and international service and the pursuit of peace. Each year, The Rotary Foundation awards up to 50 fellowships for master’s degrees and 80 for certificate studies at premier universities.
Choose the program that's right for you
Master’s degree programs
Accepted candidates study peace and development issues with research-informed teaching and a diverse student body. The programs last 15 to 24 months and include a two- to three-month field study, which participants design themselves.
Professional development certificate program
During the one-year blended learning program, experienced peace and development professionals with diverse backgrounds gain practical skills to promote peace within their communities and across the globe. Fellows complete field studies, and they also design and carry out a social change initiative. This program is intended for working professionals. Fellows earn a post-graduate diploma upon completion of the program.
Application timeline
The 2023-24 Rotary Peace Fellowship application is now closed. The 2024-25 Rotary Peace Fellowship application will be available in February, 2023. Every year, districts must submit endorsed applications to The Rotary Foundation by 1 July. Review the endorsement instructions.

Funding ensures that 400 million children receive vaccinations annually and enables continuous monitoring to help eliminate sources of the wild poliovirus. This tracking is the “Plus” in PolioPlus and enables health professionals to locate sources of the virus and work with local agencies to eliminate them.
The systems established by the PolioPlus program have helped in controlling recent outbreaks of the COVID-19 virus, and the Ebola outbreak in Africa several years ago. PolioPlus has helped raise the standard of health in countries worldwide and continues to pay benefits even where polio has been eliminated.

Representatives from all of Rotary’s districts vote on resolutions proposed by clubs, districts, the RI Board of Directors, and the General Council or Conference of RIBI, as well as urgent enactments proposed by the RI Board. Jon is a retired U.S. diplomat. Now a member of the Rotary Club of Milwaukee, he was a member of the Rotary Club of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea and the Rotary Club of Calcutta, India. He also served in Brazil, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq and as Director for South and Central Asia at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and as a Middle East Foreign Policy Advisor in the Directorate of Strategic Plans and Policy at the Joint Staff. He later worked as the Executive Director of the Miami-Dade County International Trade Consortium, and Director of International Trade and Investment for the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. Jon holds J.D., MBA, and BS degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is an Army veteran of Operation Desert Storm.

Amigos Rotarian Rob Grede Continues His Support for Needed Medical Supplies in Ukraine

Rob has been a long-time member of the Rotary Club Milwaukee Amigos After Hours. He has now made a second trip from Vienna to the Ukraine border in Poland to deliver much needed medical supplies for humanitarian benefit in Ukraine.

Months into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Robert Grede made it his mission to meet a need for critical first aid supplies for the Ukrainian military and injured civilians.
Upon learning that medical supplies and volunteers were in short supply, Grede recruited two friends to join him in an effort to fundraise, purchase and ensure that necessary supplies were delivered to Ukraine’s front line.
“Twenty-five percent of humanitarian aid coming in from the West lands on the black market, it just does not get to where it’s supposed to, and I wanted to be able to assure my donors that 100% of what they donated was going to land at the front line and help the people who needed it most,” said Grede.
Leveraging his membership in Rotary International, Grede made contact with fellow Rotarians in eastern Poland, including Zbigniew Dziedzic, the district governor of the Rotary Club of Jaroslow, Poland, who helped connect him with two Rotary clubs in Ukraine.
In May, the trio flew into Vienna, Austria, where they rented a box truck and loaded nine suitcases – filled with everything from syringes and energy bars to feminine hygiene products and Israeli compression bandages – seven boxes of military clothing and three, six-foot-tall pallets of medical supplies purchased in Vienna. Then, they drove 10 hours north to the eastern border of Poland and Ukraine, where they handed the supplies off to two Ukrainian Rotary members who were responsible for delivering the supplies directly to military medics in Bakhmut.
All told, $15,200 in medical supplies was delivered to the Ukraine military, with an additional $4,400 in supplies delivered to refugees in Poland. Grede and his two friends covered all their own travel and personal expenses.
Grede made a second voyage in September, this time delivering $6,000 in medical supplies. As the war drags on and other events dominate the news cycle, it no longer makes front-page headlines. As a result, donations have slowed to a trickle, said Grede.
Still, he continues to fundraise – through donations and potential grant funding from Rotary – in hopes of returning.
In the meantime, Grede has set up a website through Amazon where people can purchase a specific item, such as a package of tourniquets, compression bandages or burn gel, to be shipped via Amazon directly to Grede’s Rotary contacts in Jaroslow and then delivered to the front line. For context, a $100 donation buys 64 individual burn gel dressings; $50 buys 14 combat tourniquets; and $40 buys six Israeli compression bandages.
For Grede, who is now semi-retired, he said the mission is all about giving back.
“I’m lucky, I was born in the United States, and I was born free,” he said. “… I was born with an education, and I was born with the means to be able to help people. So, now that I have the time and the means and the passion, I want to exercise that. I want to make my life count.”
