Over 10,000 Ukrainian refugees enter Poland every day to escape the horrors of the Russian invasion. Many of us donate to the cause without really knowing where that money will go.
I’m doing something different.
Along with two friends, I’m going to Poland, but we need your help to purchase supplies for Ukrainian refugees.
We’re just three old guys looking to make a difference in the world. Greg Ryan and Rob Grede live in the Milwaukee area. Dale Wilson, also a Rotarian, lives in Santa Barbara.
The Plan
We meet in Vienna, Austria, rent a van, fill it with emergency items that the Ukrainian refugees can use right now. Then we drive to Przemyśl, Poland, on the Ukraine border, where we meet our Polish Rotary contact, Zbigniew Dziedzic, District Governor, in neighboring Jaroslaw.
Our Promise
We pay all our own expenses – air travel, vehicle rental, gas, food and lodging. 100% of your donation will be used for dry food, clothing and medical supplies to support Ukrainian refugees.

Some may think we need to move on in our Rotary commitment to gift the world with the full eradication of polio. Sadly, the recent outbreaks in Israel and Malawi demonstrate that we cannot leave this partially done!
Today's relevancy is clear in these two recent episodes AND all we have done has also been relevant in COVID and Ebola outbreaks.
Amigos Rotarian Angela Rester is offering to match your giving to the Foundation and PolioPlus. Because of her own donations over the last 35 years, she can gift you points toward your Paul Harris Fellow. If you give $100 to the PolioPlus then she will give $100 (in points) to the Foundation Annual Fund that helps to support our receiving of District Grants and much more. Funding ensures that 400 million children receive vaccinations annually and enables continuous monitoring to help eliminate sources of the wild poliovirus. This tracking is the “Plus” in PolioPlus and enables health professionals to locate sources of the virus and work with local agencies to eliminate them.
The systems established by the PolioPlus program have helped in controlling recent outbreaks of the COVID-19 virus, and the Ebola outbreak in Africa several years ago. PolioPlus has helped raise the standard of health in countries worldwide and continues to pay benefits even where polio has been eliminated.
After three decades without a case of wild poliovirus in Malawi, the recent detection of a case in the country’s capital kicked off a swift and urgent effort to stop the spread before further infection. In response to the case – linked to a strain originating in Pakistan, where wild polio remains endemic – Malawi’s Ministry of Health coordinated with specialized teams from the GPEI as well as neighboring governments to improve disease surveillance, mobilize communities, and launch a regional immunization campaign to protect over 20 million children with lifesaving polio vaccines.

Rotary District 6270 is excited to announce the start of the PolioPlus Society in our district. This is a district program to recognize those Rotarians, Rotaractors, and friends of Rotary, who have pledged to give at least $100 annually to the PolioPlus Fund of The Rotary Foundation, until the wild poliovirus is no longer endemic around the world. The goal of this PolioPlus Society is to raise awareness and provide recognition for Rotary’s goal of eliminating the disease from the planet.

The Council on Resolutions meets online each year. Representatives from all of Rotary’s districts vote on resolutions proposed by clubs, districts, the RI Board of Directors, and the General Council or Conference of RIBI, as well as urgent enactments proposed by the RI Board. The RI Board will consider all resolutions that the Council adopts. Adopted urgent enactments amend Rotary’s constitutional documents. Learn more about the Council on Resolutions.
The Council on Legislation met successfully last week in Chicago.

2022 Rotary International Convention in Houston
The event will bring more than 20,000 participants from around the world and deliver $30 million in local economic impact
HOUSTON (July 22, 2021) – During a joint news conference held at George R. Brown Convention Center today, Rotary and Houston First Corporation representatives announced that more than 20,000 service-minded people from around the world will gather in Houston for Rotary’s 113th annual international convention on June 4-8, 2022.
The coveted international event is returning to Houston for the third time, marking the 50th anniversary of the 1972 international convention. The Bayou City also hosted the 5th Rotary convention in 1914. The event is expected to deliver $30 million in economic impact for the city’s hotels, restaurants, retailers and attractions.
“As a global membership organization that brings people from all continents and cultures together to share, learn and take action to bring positive and lasting change to communities around the world, we are thrilled that our first in-person international convention since 2019 will take place in Houston,” said Rotary’s International President Shekhar Mehta. “And for the first time ever, our annual event will be open to members of the public who want to connect, learn and be a part of our work to grow and change lives.”
Rotary’s 2022 international convention will transform the George R. Brown Convention Center into an energized hub and cultural mosaic as the organization’s global network of volunteers gather to share information about all the ways they are taking action to address issues in their communities, to learn from notable experts, gain inspiration from world-class speakers, and connect with lifelong friends shaped through service.
Previous convention speakers include philanthropist Bill Gates; actor and philanthropist Ashton Kutcher; Prime Minister Justin Trudeau; actor, producer, host, entrepreneur, WWE Superstar and Rotary polio ambassador, John Cena; renowned primatologist Jane Goodall; and former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Andrew Young.
Organized by Rotary International in conjunction with the Houston Host Organization Committee of local Rotary members, registrants of the convention will also experience Houston’s hospitality with visits to local destinations like Space Center Houston, Kemah Boardwalk and one of Houston’s premiere shopping destinations, The Galleria. With the safety and wellbeing of participants and the wider community a top priority, Rotary’s previous two conventions were held virtually due to the global pandemic. Speaking during the press conference, John Smarge, chair of Rotary’s International Convention Committee, said, “this convention will also have a virtual component to make the event accessible to all members. And as we continue our planning, we will work closely with global and national health authorities to ensure that our in-person event follows the most current health and safety guidelines.”

Rotary Means Business encourages Rotarians to support the success of their fellow Rotarians by doing business with them, and by referring others to them. I am of the firm belief that the most honorable people to transact business with are people who abide by the 4 Way Test. So, to launch the Rotary Means Business Fellowship, we are planning an event that will be announced soon where Rotarians who are involved in business or interested in business can come to socialize and learn more about how to join the fellowship.
